Conservation scheme commissions unmanned aerial vehicle!

We are delighted to tell you that the Conservation scheme has just commissioned its own unmanned aerial vehicle or ‘drone’.

Students from the Conservation scheme will be invited to learn how to operate the drone and its camera.

Drones are now used to monitor the presence and behaviour of animals as well as being used to survey remote and inaccessible areas.

The College is very pleased that this equipment, which will be arriving soon, will open up exciting new opportunities for our students and keep you at the forefront of developments in the conservation sector.

Far-flung Felix

Far-flung Felix

Our students go on to a very wide range of positions in the sector.

Having graduated last year, Felix is currently enjoying a six month spell in the tropics with the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum.

He wanted to put his interest in the conservation of island endemic species to good use and is now on St Helena, surveying seabirds (sometimes netting rare species at night), assisting with biosecurity to protect the island’s rare species of plants and helping with habitat restoration.

As part of the College’s commitment to the environmental sector and sustainable development, we are delighted to announce that a subject scholarship of £1,500 is being made available to all new first year students starting on the Writtle Conservation scheme in September 2015. This will reduce your commitment to £7,500 per year.

Professional Accreditation from CIEEM

Professional Accreditation from CIEEM

We are very pleased to offer a three year BSc (Hons) course which has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

We are one of only seven institutions nationally who have been recognised in this way for their undergraduate provision.

Staff Profile – Dr John Morgan

Staff Profile – Dr John Morgan

The Conservation teaching staff come from a wide range of backgrounds.

John Morgan graduated from the University of Bristol and went on to a doctorate before becoming a consultant.

John has been at Writtle since 1994 and enjoys teaching all three years of the Conservation undergraduate programme. John also teaches on Masters programmes across the College.

He lives in Chelmsford and, when not teaching and marking student work, enjoys football and birdwatching.

He maintains that his favourite bird is any bird you see for the first time although, when pushed, he concedes it is probably the Robin!

And finally…

And finally…

Barn Owls seem to have been increasingly active in the past couple of years. After many weeks, our trail camera finally managed to capture a glimpse of one of the birds in a College building.
