Equine Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation students have been assigned a task as part of their Equine Massage and Performance Therapy module.

In this case, Lily, a 14.2hh Welsh Section D mare who is one of our resident riding horses. Students have taken an initial static and dynamic assessment, including under saddle. They have then drawn up a programme to therapeutically support her return to work under supervision from our therapy and yard staff.

The students filmed the mare to illustrate her ‘before’ and ‘after’ states which showed the extent to which her left hind demonstrates lateral swing for instance.

She was also hollow under saddle with a lack of lateral flexion, running and ‘leaping’ into canter and falling back out into a disorganised trot.

The plan drawn up by the student group involves a combination of massage, myofascial release, stretching, supervised laser treatment, targeted kinesio taping, pole work, long-reining, ridden work and lunging with and without training aids, all over a 12 week period.

The entire plan is supported by relevant academic papers that reinforce the idea behind each intervention. The results to date have been quite remarkable, with the students concerned taking a brilliant, flexible approach to her rehabilitation, evolving the plan to suit.

She is already beginning to really show the benefits, with a far more correct, natural and relaxed way of going. We’re really looking forward to seeing the results in a few weeks’ time!
